How To Pack a Carry-on for International Travel

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

Why would I need help to pack my carry-on? This seems simple, but when traveling internationally, packing a carry-on, you will want some additional items with you on the plane. I always forget a few, so having a checklist, or some additional pointers comes in handy. The planes come with a few additional luxuries, but you will want to have your own items as well.

This will give you my Top 10 Tips for your carry-on! I know I have said it before, but I do love a list!

Jenifer’s Top 10 Travel Tips for Carry-on for Traveling Abroad

#1 Document Holder.

When travelling internationally, there always seems to be paper, even when trying to be paperless. There are confirmations, tickets, your itinerary, and more. To stay organized and keep everything in one place, I always keep items, and my passport in a document holder. This ensures that when I need something, I have one go-to place.

#2 Passport Holder

I highly recommend using a passport holder. Some countries still require proof of the COVID vaccine. The passport holder keeps everything in one place. You can keep your passport and vaccine proof in one place. Additionally, some countries require other vaccines, this is a great place to keep the information together.

#3 Electronics

Keep your electronics with you. This seems self-explanatory, but I want to put a reminder here, just in case for those that might forget.

#4 USB Chargers

Put charges with USB ends in your carry on for travel abroad. Most planes for travel internationally will have a place between the seats or in front of you for you to plug in a USB charger. This will save your power bank from being used and keep your hand-held electronics charged.

#5 Toiletry Bag

I always keep a small toiletry bag with items in my carry-on. Included items are toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, soap, and a washcloth.

#6 Jewelry

You want to keep all real jewelry with you. This includes valuable watches. Anything of value should remain with you. This prevents anything of value from being lost.

#7 Refillable Water Bottle

When travelling internationally, you will want your water bottle. Depending on which country you are traveling to, the water is safe to drink. This is a way to always keep water in hand when you need it.

#8 Stain Stick

These sticks are so handy and help when in a pinch. They do not take up a lot of room and if you spill on yourself, just rub it on right away. I like to put it in my carry on, so I have it with me all the time.

#9 Noise Cancelling Headphones

Headphones come in a wide range of options. I recommend selecting ones that also have noise cancelling too. For me, I still like over the head options. The buds tend to fall out of my ears. Here is the pair of headphones that I use that you can find on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Bose-QuietComfort-45-Bluetooth-Canceling-Headphones/dp/B098FKXT8L/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2FTDB2X307Y4I&keywords=bose+noise+cancelling+headphones&qid=1689769708&sprefix=bose%2Caps%2C254&sr=8-4&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18630bbb-fcbb-42f8-9767-857e17e03685

#10 Long Wrap or Pashmina

When traveling overseas, the airlines provide a pillow and blanket, you may find that the air is too cold. I usually travel with a long wrap (some call it a pashmina). This will provide me with another layer in case I am cold. If you are not cold, you can fold it and use it as another pillow. It is versatile.

What is Next?

Make sure to download the airlines app onto whatever electronic device you will use while on the airplane. If you are flying domestic prior to flight that will take you overseas, they will most likely have free entertainment through their app. Need tips for packing your suitcase for international travel?
