Join us as we navigate through the intricacies of selecting the right accommodations, arranging sensory-friendly activities, and fostering an inclusive travel experience that celebrates both the unique joys of exploration and the individual needs of travelers with autism. Together, let's embark on a journey where every moment in the Bahamas is crafted to be not just a getaway, but a truly enriching and accessible adventure for all.
Choosing the Right Time to Travel. If you have the opportunity, consider traveling during off-peak times. This avoids crowds, long lines and long wait times. Also consider weather conditions ensuring they align with sensory needs of your family.
Planning Activities - When selecting activities, ensure they align with the interests of your family and are sensory friendly. Create activities that allow for breaks. When we are on vacation, we create a family schedule that is similar to the one we have at home. This gives our kids predictability for them. They know what to expect every day. If there is a change, we let them know at the beginning of the day so they understand what to expect.
Communication and Sensory Tools - Pack comfort items. Keep in mind that they are not always stuffed animals. Our eldest packs the same two books on every trip to have on the nightstand. Noise canceling headphones, fidgets, and sunglasses will help with sensory regulation. Communication or visual aid cards may help. A social story may help prior to the trip.
Resorts - Select an autism friendly resort or have quiet rooms away from the noise, have sensory friendly rooms that have minimum decorations in the room. Some resorts have autism trained staff.
Flexibility and Enjoyment: Maintaining flexibility in plans allows for adjustments based on individual needs and preferences, ensuring that each moment of the vacation contributes positively to the overall experience.
Additional Tips:
Regulating Activities: Incorporate activities that help regulate sensory input, such as swimming or walks on the beach.
Review Itinerary: Review the itinerary with the individual with autism to manage expectations and reduce anxiety.
Educate Travel Companions: specific needs to ensure understanding and support. There are words to use and words not to use in our family. For example instead of “get down” we use “put your feet on the floor”.
As you prepare to embark on your autism-friendly journey to the Bahamas, remember that every step taken towards inclusivity and understanding contributes to a more accessible and enjoyable travel experience for everyone. Whether you're discovering the vibrant culture of Nassau, unwinding on the secluded beaches of the Out Islands, or marveling at the underwater wonders of the Exumas, the Bahamas offers a diverse range of experiences that can be tailored to meet the needs of every traveler.
Safe travels, and may your next adventure in the Bahamas be filled with joy, relaxation, and the warmth of a truly inclusive experience.
